January 19, 2006 Leave a comment

Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) version 2 is installed (but not enabled) with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 by default. After enabling the IMF , the .dat file and the .dll file must be updated regularly to keep the filter current and effective. Microsoft release new updates every first snd third Wednesday. Updates are available through Microsoft Update. Organizations can also deploy IMF updates through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and System Management Services (SMS).

The Intelligent Message Filter is language-independent. Intelligent Message Filter updates are offered for all language versions of Exchange Server 2003.

How to enable updates?

You must create the ContentFilterState registry entry.

  • Open registry editor (regedit)
  • Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftExchange

  • Create new DWORD Value with name ContentFilterState
  • Modify it and set Data value to 1
  • Quit regedit
  • Restart Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service

Ooo I almost forget… 🙂 Now you can go to Microsoft Update and install IMF updates. Or you can manualy update… 😉
